Cameras bust Spokane drivers running lights, speeding in school zones

Spokane drivers continue to run red lights and speed through certain school zones in the area, despite technology designed to catch them in the act.

A report to Spokane’s Public Safety and Health Committee shows that between November 17th and December 27th, drivers were issued 1,152 citations for running red lights through intersections monitored by Photo Red; that’s 67 more violations than this time last year.

The intersection that yielded the most violations: 3rd and Freya, with 244 recorded. Mission and Hamilton had the second highest number of violations with 115. There were 111 violations issued for drivers running red lights at Thor and 2nd.

The report also details the number of speeding infractions through school zones monitored by cameras. There were 900 violations in those areas, which is down from 1,057 from last year.

Drivers were most likely to be caught speeding near Longfellow Elementary School, where 634 violations were issued. 266 violations were issued near Finch Elementary School.
