Bush Says West Must Stand With Afghanistan
PARIS (AP) — President Bush has focused on Afghanistan in a speech the White House billed as the centerpiece of his European trip.
Bush says Europe and the United States must work together to ensure Afghanistan never again becomes a base for terrorists.
One of the main goals of Bush’s weeklong European visit is to urge leaders to make greater contributions to the war effort in Afghanistan in both money and troops.
American, British, Canadian, Dutch and Danish forces are taking on the brunt of the fighting in the more volatile areas of Afghanistan, and eager for help from allies.
Bush applauded French President Nicolas Sarkozy for committing additional troops to Afghanistan.
Bush will dine with Sarkozy at the French presidential palace tonight. He began his day with a meeting with Pope Benedict at the Vatican.
