Bush Meets With NATO Chief Over Afghanistan

WHITE HOUSE (AP) — President Bush holds talks at the White House with NATO chief Jaap de Hoop Scheffer Friday on the troubled mission in Afghanistan.

The U.S. and its NATO allies are coming up against increasingly brazen attacks by Taliban militants. They were ousted in the U.S. invasion after Nine-Eleven but have been making a comeback.

Friday’s visit comes as the U.S. tries to get France, Germany and some of the other countries in the alliance to send more troops to Afghanistan and drop restrictions that keep them out of the most dangerous regions.

And now, Canada is joining the complaints, threatening to pull out its combat troops if other NATO members don’t send troops to the particularly dangerous south.

At least 21 foreign soldiers have ben killed in Afghanistan this year.
