Brush Fire NW Of Omak Over 100 Acres

OMAK, Wash. – The Green Lake Fire northwest of Omak has grown to over 500 acres as voluntary evacuations have taken place.

The fire is off of Green Lake Road, about seven miles northwest of Omak.  That road has been closed from Salmon Creek Road to Conconully Road, as the fire burns west of the road.  The fire is moving to the north and northwest.

Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers says that the residents of 12 homes near the fire were given the option of staying or leaving.  He said half of the families have left, while half has stayed.

Rogers also said that the only structure that has burned was the pump house where the fire started.

Two helicopters are dropping water on the fire, and planes are also dropping fire retardant on the fire. Guy Gifford of the Washington Department of Natural Resources says that air tankers from British Columbia are also helping, and ground crews are starting to build a line around the fire.  Fire crews from Omak and Okanogan have also been helping with the fire.

Gifford also said that a Type III incident crew would be arriving at the fire on Friday morning to take over management of the fire.
