Browns rookie CB to pay mom’s mortgage with first check
You might say that the mother of Cleveland Browns cornerback Denzel Ward raised her son right.
The 21-year-old rookie and Ohio native, who was drafted out of Ohio State by the Browns with the fourth overall pick of this year’s NFL draft, decided he’s going to use his first paycheck on his mom.
“I’m paying for her mortgage of her house,” Ward said on NFL Network’s Total Access. “I’m paying her house off so she doesn’t have to worry about that anymore.”
Ward had said he wanted to treat his mother once he got paid, but didn’t decide exactly how to do so until over Mother’s Day weekend.
Although Ward hasn’t yet signed his rookie deal, when he does so he’ll receive a fully guaranteed four-year deal worth more than $29 million.
Nicole Ward wrote a letter to her son on draft night telling him how proud she was and that his late father was celebrating his achievements from heaven.
“I love you too, mom,” he said after reading the letter out loud for NFL cameras.
