Bonner County works to keep residents safe in emergencies

SANDPOINT, Idaho — Two Sandpoint police officers were shot early Monday morning. The officers are said to be in good condition. The suspect in the shooting is dead.

While that shooting scene was unfolding, police told people to stay inside their homes and keep the door locked. Others had to be evacuated as a precaution.

Part of Bonner County’s action plan is to keep neighbors and nearby children safe, so they closed Forrest M. Bird Charter High School, right next to that shooting scene.

A Nixle notification was sent out to let people know they needed to evacuate. That service alerts neighbors to situations just like this.

The county building on Highway 2 provided shelter and food for the nearby residents that were evacuated. County Commissioner Dan McDonald says there was a lot of uncertainty early on, but he’s proud of the professionals who made a terrible day a little better and much safer.

“Congratulations to all of those folks that were involved and that protected the rest of the citizens of Bonner County that were affected,” said McDonald.
