BMW enters sub-compact SUV race with all-new X2

BMW is getting into the subcompact SUV market with the all-new 2019 X2 that was revealed Monday in Detroit.

The new SUV is a little smaller than BMW’s previous small SUV. The X2 is 3.2 inches shorter than the X1 and 2.8 inches lower.

Helping to keep the car on the road is an optional camera-based driver-assistance system that includes things like lane departure warning, speed limit information, automatic high beam and frontal collision warning.

There’s even a parking assistance tool that will parallel park the car itself.

Inside, drivers get all the information they need on a 6.5-inch screen or optional 8.8-inch screen. There’s also an available head-up display system to provide even more information.

The company also integrated the BMW Connected and BMW Connected+ apps into the car to provide increased connectivity between the car and smartphones. The car is also available with a built-in WiFi hotspot and optional Apple CarPlay compatibility.

Powering the little SUV will be a 2-liter turbo-charged four-cylinder engine making 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. That power gets to the wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Pricing for the new X2 will be announced closer to its launch.
