Bill suggests equipping more Washington libraries with Discover passes
OLYMPIA, Wash. – A new bill in the Washington legislature proposes equipping libraries across the state with Discover passes for card holders to use.
The bill, proposed by Spokane senator Andy Billig, suggests taking $35,000 from from the general fund to provide the passes to any library that chooses to make them available for their patrons.
Billig’s bill notes that some libraries have seen success with offering the passes, as well as providing different recreational equipment to library card holders.
The Spokane Public Library has a program called the “Library of Things” already in place. The program offers different items, like the Discover pass, but also snowshoes, compasses and telescopes to anyone with a library card. The Spokane County Library District also offers passes.
“The commission should prioritize offering passes to libraries that also offer to check out backpacks, binoculars, or other equipment that will enhance the patron’s outdoor experience,” the bill states.
