SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — The Spokane Valley City Council moved to elect Ben Wick as the city’s new mayor.

Every two years, during the first meeting of the new city council, members choose a new mayor and deputy mayor from among their fellow council members.

“Thank you for all of your support. I look forward to doing my best to work for you as the Mayor of Spokane Valley,” Wick wrote on Facebook.

Wick was most recently elected to the city council in 2017, but also served between 2012 and 2016. He works at Spokane Industries and also owns and publishes the Spokane Valley Current and Liberty Lake Splash community newspapers. Wick has additionally served on the boards for the Spokane Regional Transportation Council and Spokane Neighborhood Action Partners.

During Tuesday night’s meeting, the council also elected councilwoman Brandi Peetz to serve as deputy mayor. She joined the council in 2017 and was re-elected in November. Peetz has served as a Spokane County 911 operator, officer manger, insurance specialist and has served on the Natinoal Association for Civilian Oversight of Law Enforcement.

Tuesday night’s meeting was the first assembly of the new council. In November, voters re-elected Arne Woodard and voted in new councilman Tim Hattenburg. They now join councilmembers Pam Haley and Linda Thompson who were not up for re-election.
