Avista to roll out smart meters in Spokane

Pretty soon, every Avista home will have a smart meter.

When you do the research – the change from analog meters to smart meters makes a lot of sense.

“It enables us to detect outages faster – give information to customers at their fingertips and allows us to be more efficient in how we operate out business,” said Josh Diluciano, Avista’s Director of Electrical Engineering.

Consider the fact that 60 percent of U.S. households already have smart meters (and that analog meters are no longer in production) and it’s no wonder why Avista announced the change.

The smart meter will answer plenty of customer questions in this age of information.

“Customers can log into their web portal and view their usage anytime they want,” explained Diluciano. “They don’t need to wait for a bill.”

The majority of the switches will be made during 2019 and 2020, but those that call Airway Heights or the U-District home can expect the change much sooner. Avista will roll out smart meters in those areas this fall and monitor the data through the winter

“Yeah, i think it’s pretty nice,” said Matt Yoder, an Airway Heights homeowner. “Both my wife and I are pretty energy efficiency minded so I think it’s going to be great.”

The installations will occur mostly during business hours Monday through Friday. Avista will notify homes by mail 90 days before they plan to make the switch.
