Avista sees rise in scams, warns customers what to look out for
SPOKANE, Wash. — Avista wants you to beware of scammers.
The utilities company says scams are becoming more frequent and gave a number to call if you ever become suspicious it’s happening to you.
So, how do you know if you’re being scammed? Avista’s website breaks down what potential scenarios might look like.
If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be with Avista and that person proceeds to tell you your account is past due, or that an immediate payment is needed, Avista says chances are it’s a scam artist.
Also be on the lookout for callers using high pressure tactics or who try to get you to transfer funds electronically. Callers might also ask for your confidential information and become angry or threaten to disconnect services- typically within the hour.
If you do think you’re the target of a scammer, Avista says hang up the phone and make sure to report the number.
You can also call 800-227-9187 at any time to check with Avista about whether a contact is actually coming from the company.
