Austin Dillon wins Daytona 500

Austin Dillon won the Daytona 500 on Sunday with a car bearing the No. 3 made famous by Dale Earnhardt.

The 27-year-old driver did so on the 17th anniversary of Earnhardt’s death during a Daytona 500 crash and just over 20 years since Earnhardt last won the iconic race.

Darrell Wallace Jr. finished second in the 60th running of the race, followed by Denny Hamlin, Joey Logano and Chris Buescher.

Earlier the day, the race saw several crashes, including ones that left Danica Patrick, Jimmie Johnson, Chase Elliott, Kasey Kahne, Brad Keselowski and Kevin Harvick, among others, out of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season opener.

For Patrick, her crash and resulting finish in 35th place also meant the end to her NASCAR career. She plans to race in the Indianapolis 500 in May before retiring from racing.
