American Stabbed To Death At Beijing Tourist Site

BEIJING (AP) — The murder of an American tourist has cast a shadow over the first full day of Olympic competition.

Officials say a Chinese man attacked a Minnesota couple, killing Todd Bachman and seriously injuring his wife. The two are the parents of a 2004 Olympian and the in-laws of the U.S. men’s volleyball coach. The knife attack occurred while they were visiting a 13th-century tower in Beijing.

China’s official news agency says the attacker then jumped to his death.

The U.S. Embassy in China says the stabbing did not appear to be aimed at Americans. A Chinese tour guide was also injured in the attack.

President Bush says his thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.
