Alleged Mastermind Of Nun’s Death In Custody

SAO PAULO — Police say an Amazon rancher accused of masterminding the murder of American nun and rain forest activist Dorothy Stang has been taken into custody.

Police inspector Vitor Vales says Vitalmiro Moura voluntarily turned himself in shortly after midnight in the city of Altamira in Brazil’s northern state of Para. He refused to provide further information.

Last year Moura was acquitted of orchestrating the 2005 murder of Stang, who was shot six times at close range with a revolver in the small jungle city of Anapu.

But on Tuesday, a Brazilian court ordered Moura’s arrest and retrial after Para’s top court reversed the not-guilty verdict because a video used by the defense was not admissible as evidence.
