After 85 Yrs, Yankee Stadium: Going, Going, Gone!
NEW YORK — After 85 years, Yankee Stadium is closing down.
Sunday night’s game with the Baltimore Orioles was the finale for the famed Bronx ballpark that opened in April 1923. And the Yankees closed it out in style, beating Baltimore 7-3.
Eighty-three-year-old Yankee legend Yogi Berra, who coined the phrase “it ain’t over till it’s over,” put his own stamp on the day saying, “I’m sorry to see it over, I’ll tell you that.”
All the greats were remembered during a 65-minute pregame ceremony that included 21 retired players, six of them Hall of Famers.
Reggie Jackson said, “I feel like I’m losing an old friend.”
Outside Yankee Stadium, the marquee that usually has the day’s start time and opponent said: “Thanks for the Memories.”
A new 1.3 billion-dollar Yankee Stadium opens across the street next year.
