Afghan Police Say 30 Taliban Killed In Clashes
KABUL — A provincial police chief says 30 Taliban fighters have been killed and 17 others wounded in clashes with Afghan and foreign troops in southern Afghanistan.
Juma Gul Himat says the clashes that started late Monday in Uruzgan’s Dehrawood district are still going on Tuesday.
Himat says the militants died Monday and that four policemen have been wounded.
Southern Afghanistan is the center of the Taliban-led insurgency. Thousands of new U.S. forces will deploy to that region in an attempt to reverse recent Taliban gains following what appeared to be their initial defeat after the U.S. invasion in 2001.
