A look at how the new downtown Spokane police precinct will be funded
SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Mayor Nadine Woodward announced the location of Spokane’s new downtown police precinct on Monday.
The new precinct will soon be housed in the space that formerly held Umpqua Bank, near Riverside and Wall. Woodward said it is expected to open by summer 2020.
The City has set aside $295,000 to fund the new location, which will go toward IT, infrastructure, and furnishings, according to Brian Coddington, communications director for the City of Spokane.
It’s important to note this money will be funded by the City and at no additional cost to taxpayers. Any gap will be filled from salary savings or the City’s general fund, Coddington said.
Additionally, the site’s developer is contributing $235,000 to the building.
The city signed a 10-year-deal and will pay $12,979 a month for the space, with a 3% annual escalation.
It is said the new precinct will increase police visibility downtown and accommodate up to 25 law enforcement officers.
On Monday, Woodward said 16 SPD officers have already been assigned to the precinct, which will also have space for two Spokane County Sheriff’s Office deputies. More officers will be assigned closer to the precinct’s opening.
