A feel for the future: graduates take senior walk to class for visually impaired
SPOKANE, Wash. — Nearly 300 graduates from North Central High School and Shadle Park High School took their senior walks to schools across Spokane Thursday.
“You walked those halls at some point and you can connect with these kids,” graduate Erik McLaughlin said.
The seniors visited elementary and middle schools to share what they learned in high school with the future of the school district — but one group of students at The Garfield School actually taught them a lesson.
Six students with the school’s visually impaired program got the chance to feel like graduates Thursday. The elementary schoolers have low vision or are partially or fully blind. North Central seniors visited their classroom and let the students feel their caps, gowns and cords.
McLaughlin said it’s an experience most take for granted.
“Being around that sort of environment, it also just kind of makes you thankful for everything,” McLaughlin said.
He said he’ll take this experience with him as he embarks on his next step — taking a gap year, then hopefully enlisting in the Army.
“They’re super sweet kids and I’m glad they had the biggest grins on their face,” McLaughlin said. “It’s something you won’t forget.”
