6 injured in San Diego prison riot

Six people were injured in a prison riot in San Diego Friday night, according to a Cal Fire spokesman.

The riot took place at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility, Capt. Thomas Shoots told CNN.

“Approximately 100 inmates were in the yard at the time, but Cal Fire had adequate resources and the situation is stabilized,” he said.

It is unclear if all six of the injured are inmates.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation says the riot began at around 8:30 p.m.

In a news release, CDCR said,”staff immediately gave participants of the riot multiple orders to stop fighting. Officers used several rounds of less than lethal use of force methods to quell the disturbance.”

Corrections officials confirmed four inmates sustained injuries sufficient to require hospitalization, including puncture wounds and bruises.

No staff members were injured, authorities said.

All six patients were evaluated and two of the six were airlifted to receive treatment for serious injuries, Shoots said.

Although Cal Fire is designated to wildland firefighting, the agency says it also responds to emergency situations such as train wrecks, hazardous material spills, water rescues, search and rescue missions and civil disturbances.
