4 things to know for August 12

Suspicious Fires: Two fires in Spokane Valley started just a couple blocks apart and within a few minutes of each other early this morning in Spokane Valley. Investigators are now looking into exactly what happened. The first fire started around 1:00 a.m. in the 8300 block of East Alki. The second fire happened just a few minutes later in the 8600 block. No one was hurt in either fire. If anyone noticed anything suspicious in that area this morning, they are asked to call Crime Check at 456-2233.
Rutter Canyon Fire: The Rutter Canyon Fire burning near Indian Trail and Rutter Parkway has burned about 150 acres. That fire broke out yesterday. Guy Gifford with the Department of Natural Resources says they were able to complete fire trail lines around the fire overnight. Level two evacuations are still in place, though they are expected to be downgraded later today. Crews say today they will work on securing the fire perimeter.
Sandpoint shooting: One man is dead in an officer-involved shooting in Sandpoint. It happened around 3:00 yesterday afternoon in the 1000 block of Ruth Ave. Investigators aren’t saying yet what happened that led up to the shooting. They also aren’t commenting on why officers were at the address to begin with. Investigators stayed on scene through the night.
Weather: Today will be very hot, with temperatures in the high 90s to lower 100s. We have a chance of rain showers in the morning and a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. Tonight will be partly cloudy with a chance of evening showers and thunderstorms. Lows tonight will be in the lower to mid 60s.
