4 News Now honored with Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, including Overall Excellence

The Radio Television News Association honored 4 News Now Tuesday with two regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, including the top award for Overall Excellence.

RTDNA honors stations across the country each year.

4 News Now is part of Region 1, which includes Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Montana and Alaska.

The organization began presenting awards Tuesday for work done by journalists in 2021.

“The RTDNA Edward R. Murrow Awards are among the most prestigious in broadcast and digital news,” reads a statement from RTDNA. “Award recipients demonstrate the spirit of excellence that Murrow set as a standard for the profession of broadcast and digital journalism.”

4 News Now won the award for Hard News for Inside the ICU. In that groundbreaking story, Robyn Nance and photojournalist Brian Belanger were given unprecedented access to the ICU at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center.

Their story showed the reality hospitals were dealing with in treating COVID-19 patients and allowed caregivers to share their stories of working on the front lines of a global pandemic.

“Our journalists were able to tell the heartbreaking stories from Inside the ICU because of decades of trust built up in the community,” said 4 News Now News Director Melissa Luck. “Sharing the reality of what was happening in our region’s largest hospital during our community’s most challenging time is what local journalism is all about.”

Inside the ICU is nominated for an Emmy Award, as well.

4 News Now also took home the award for Overall Excellence.

That award showcased the work the 4 News Now team did through newscasts, news promotion and digital platforms. It’s a testament to the work the team did, even while themselves dealing with the challenges of the pandemic.

“I’m most proud of this award because it truly celebrates every member of our team,” Luck said. “We work for a small, family-owned company that’s committed to local journalism. Because of that support every day, we’re able to be innovative in our storytelling and committed to the stories that matter most in our community. We share this award with our entire staff and the larger Morgan Murphy Media family.”

Regional winners will be announced over the next several weeks. Each regional winner advances to the National Murrow Award competition, which will be decided this summer.
