30 People Killed In Somali Capital
MOGADISHU, Somalia — A Somali business leader says mortars are pounding the capital’s main market and 30 people have been killed.
Ali Mohamed Mohamud Ali Dhere of the Bakara market traders’ association says the market came under heavy fire Monday as Somali soldiers tried to hit back at Islamic insurgents.
The Islamic insurgents had earlier Monday fired mortars at the airport and the presidential palace. It is unclear whether there are any casualties or what damage has been caused.
In the past government officials have suspected insurgents use Bakara market as a base.
Government officials are not immediately available for comment.
The Islamic insurgents had vowed to attacks during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Ramadan began on Sept. 1.
