20-year-old Rathdrum woman killed in crash near Hauser Lake

HAUSER LAKE, Idaho — A 20-year-old Idaho woman was killed in a single car crash near Hauser Lake Monday night.
Idaho State Police responded to State Highway 53 at milepost 2, in Kootenai county, around 8:56 p.m. Troopers found Mercedes A. Abernathey, of Rathdrum, dead at the scene.
According to ISP, Abernathey was driving westbound on SH53 in a black 1998 Subaru Legacy when she drove off the right shoulder and hit a guardrail. She overcorrected and went off the left shoulder of the road, causing her car to roll onto the railroad tracks below.
Abernathey was not wearing a seatbelt. ISP continues to investigate the crash.
